2015-12-12 Wharton State Forest – Atsion trail and the Abandoned Southern Railroad of New Jersey

Our trip this week to the Wharton State Forest – Atsion trail is an interesting one. As we drove down the Atlantic City Expway to the Spring Rd. Hammonton NJ,  some abandoned locomotives caught our eyes.

I took quite a few shots with my NX500 + Rokinon 12mm F2 combo to get some exaggerated perspectives.  And in post-processing I tuned down the saturation and dimmed the sky to have a bit of obsolete taste.

I have to say, this place is pretty photogenic if you like old stuff. Apart from these wide angle view pictures, you can also get some close up details of the rust, textures, colors. Portrait shots could also be interesting here.  For these detailed photos I use my Sigma DP2m and DP3m.

I wish I could have spent more time there. There were many interesting things left for me to shot, perhaps next time. Before I started to write this blog I spent some time looking for the address of this location. It is 212 Spring Rd, Hammonton, NJ 08037 on google earth.
We then continue our trip to the Wharton State Forest, where we planned to have a short trail hiking. Again there are some obsolete stuff to shoot.

This roofless building provides possibilities for different lighting and compositions. Shooting through the door creates a natural frame of the photo and the warm light  coming from the other side of the building gives me a dimensional feeling.

As we went on to the trail, there were actually less scenes for me to shoot. It feels very difficult to frame in the woods when using an ultra wide angle lens without including too much distractions. So we decided to focus more on getting some exercises before it turned too dark.

New discovery on Jan 1st 2016
We revisited the wetlands near the park and found more beautiful things to enjoy. This following picture shows the vineyard in the winter where the red branches without leaves complement with the vibrant cloudscape.

And I also like the black and white representation of those burned tree

The pond nearby should also be fantastic photo subject but we were a bit late to scout around before sunset.
